Edina’s Mobile ECMO Program Enhances Emergency Cardiac Care

The Edina Fire Department has expanded its Mobile Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program, a pioneering initiative that delivers advanced life-support capabilities directly to patients experiencing severe cardiac or respiratory failure. This program, the first of its kind, allows for rapid deployment of specialized equipment and personnel to initiate ECMO therapy in pre-hospital settings, significantly improving survival chances for critical patients.

Initially launched in 2021 as a pilot program in partnership with Fairview Health Systems and other healthcare providers, the Mobile ECMO Truck (MET) has demonstrated remarkable success. In 2022, Edina became the site of the world’s first mobile ECMO procedure, marking a significant milestone in emergency medical services.

In February, the Edina City Council approved an amendment to the MET agreement with Fairview Health Systems, ensuring the program’s continuation and expansion within the city. Fire Chief Andrew Slama emphasized the program’s importance, stating, “The first-in-the-world mobile ECMO procedure took place in Edina, Minnesota, in 2022.”

The Mobile ECMO program exemplifies Edina’s commitment to innovative healthcare solutions and its dedication to enhancing emergency medical services for the community.
