Edina’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability: A Community Effort

Edina has long been recognized for its proactive approach to environmental sustainability. Central to these efforts is the city’s Climate Action Plan (CAP), unanimously approved by the City Council in 2021. The CAP aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030, using 2019 as a baseline, and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This comprehensive plan encompasses nine sectors, 36 strategies, and nearly 200 actions designed to foster a thriving environment for all residents.

To support the CAP’s objectives, Edina established the Community Climate Action Fund. This initiative offers incentives for residents and businesses to adopt sustainable practices, such as purchasing electric bicycles, implementing energy-efficient measures, and utilizing renewable energy sources. Notably, all energy-related projects require a recent in-person energy assessment to qualify for funding, ensuring that efforts are both effective and tailored to individual needs.

Community engagement plays a pivotal role in Edina’s environmental initiatives. The annual Morningside Earth Day Community Festival exemplifies this commitment. This zero-waste event features environmental education, family-friendly activities, and showcases local food and entertainment, fostering a sense of collective responsibility and action among residents.

Edina’s dedication to sustainability is further evidenced by the restoration of Arden Park. Completed in 2021, this project transformed the 18-acre park into an urban oasis, offering recreational opportunities while enhancing natural resources. The restoration’s success was recognized when Arden Park was named the 2025 Minnesota Watersheds Project of the Year, highlighting the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

In collaboration with organizations like Minnesota GreenCorps, Edina has also prioritized waste reduction and recycling. Efforts include educational presentations, community events like clothing swaps, and initiatives to improve recycling practices in multi-family properties. These programs aim to raise awareness and encourage sustainable behaviors among residents.

Edina’s comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability underscores the importance of community involvement and proactive planning. Through initiatives like the Climate Action Plan, Community Climate Action Fund, and various community events, the city continues to lead by example, demonstrating that collective efforts can drive meaningful change toward a more sustainable future.
